How to navigate politics: stakeholder mapping

I discovered a new tool lately. I wanted to share it with you: stakeholder mapping.

It is a very simple tool, really. I think that showing you a sample one will be rather self-explanatory:

A sample stakeholder mapping. Stakeholders are ranked on a two-dimensions scale: power of influence and level of sponsorship.
  • Draw a simple two dimensions diagram, and split it in four quadrants.
  • A first dimension is the power of influence and the second dimension is the level of sponsorship.
  • Now add stakeholders and place them on the diagram.
  • Finally, think about how they might move on the diagram. Think about what you can do to get things in a better shape for you.

I think that’s it. There’s not much more to say about it. Can you see how powerful this can be?

Keep this tool handy for the next time you need to navigate politics!
